What is Legionella and why should you know about?

If you’re not familiar with Legionella, here’s a quick reminder. One form of bacteria that is frequently found in natural freshwater settings, such as ponds and streams, is legionella. When it invades and spreads within artificial water systems, it becomes dangerous. Plumbing systems, hot water tanks, cooling towers, and hot tubs can all create the perfect environment for Legionella to grow.

Inhaling tiny water droplets infected with the germs poses the greatest health risk. Air conditioning units, showers, fountains, and other sources of aerosolised water could cause this. Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia that can be deadly in up to 25% of cases, is caused by a Legionella infection. In the UK, there are about 500 documented instances of legionnaires’ disease every year, according to Public Health England. Epidemics in the UK and Europe highlight how important it is to have effective control.

Anyone can become ill by breathing in contaminated aerosols, but smokers, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems are more vulnerable. Legionella Risk Management

Legionella risk management refers to the systematic approach taken to prevent or control the growth and spread of Legionella bacteria, particularly Legionella pneumophila, which is responsible for causing Legionnaires’ disease. This disease is a severe form of pneumonia that can be contracted by inhaling aerosolised droplets containing the bacteria, typically from sources like cooling towers, hot water systems, showers, hot tubs, and other water-based systems.

Effective legionella risk management is crucial in various settings, especially in large buildings, healthcare facilities, hotels, industrial plants, and other environments where water systems are present. The primary goal is to minimise the risk of Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks by implementing preventive measures and monitoring strategies. Here are some key components of legionella risk management:

Risk Assessment:

Identify potential sources of Legionella bacteria and assess the level of risk they pose. This involves examining the design and condition of water systems, identifying areas with stagnant water, and determining potential points of bacterial growth and dispersion.

Water System Maintenance:

Regular maintenance and cleaning of water systems are essential to prevent the buildup of biofilms and sediments that could provide a favourable environment for Legionella bacteria to thrive.

Temperature Control:

Legionella bacteria proliferate between 20°C (68°F) and 45°C (113°F). Maintaining water temperatures outside this range can help control bacterial growth. Hot water should be stored at temperatures above 60°C (140°F) and cold water below 20°C (68°F).

Disinfection:

Various disinfection methods, such as thermal disinfection, chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and ultraviolet (UV) treatment, can be used to control Legionella in water systems.

Monitoring and Testing:

Regular monitoring and testing of water samples from different points within the water system help ensure that Legionella bacteria levels remain within acceptable limits.

Record Keeping:

Keeping detailed records of all risk management activities, maintenance, and testing results is essential for compliance, audit purposes, and tracking improvements.
